Government Authority located in Milford, Connecticut; USA based organization looking for expert vendor for city-wide archaeological assessment and GIS overlay.
[A] Budget: Looking for Proposal
[B] Scope of Service:
Vendor needs to provide consultant to perform a city-wide archaeological sensitivity assessment and create accompanying geographic information system (GIS) layer(s) that can be used to identify areas of archaeological sensitivity within the city to the government authority located in Milford, CT.
- Assessment is envisioned as a city-wide study to identify areas of archaeological sensitivity, including pre-colonial Native American and other historic sites, using a combination of existing documentation, new research, and field surveys; e Assessment is intended to provide a broad understanding of areas of sensitivity throughout the City and is not proposed to include detailed individual parcel research; Assessment Map is envisioned as a GIS-based predictive model.
- Project will entail background research, field survey, analysis and interpretation, the creation of a GIS-based predictive model with accompanying GIS layers, and report writing.
- This additional research may include visiting local repositories, examining historical documents or maps, reviewing professional publications, and/or interviewing avocational archaeologists from the region.
- GIS-based predictive models are based upon assumptions about subsistence and settlement throughout the region, as well as archaeological site distributions found in areas with similar environmental characteristics. The archaeological sensitivity of an area generally, takes into consideration natural environmental characteristics such as topography, soil quality, access to resources, and access to fresh water sources. While these characteristics frequently influence archaeological site locations, GIS-based predictive models may also include information derived from historic maps, oral and primary source history, and aerial photos. Finally, while a location may be sensitive for containing an archaeological site, consideration of prior site disturbances should be incorporated into the GIS-based predictive model to reflect the probability of encountering an intact archaeological site.
